The mountains and hills of the Auvergne in the Massif Central form the heart of France to my eyes, placed deep in the centre of the country, far from the large cities & the madding crowds. My travels generally require heavy duty map reading to glean the most from these areas - it would be a waste of my journey to use the autoroutes when discovering an area such as this. If you get tired of the region (you'd be mad btw) the numerous neighbouring areas are only an hour or two away. Don't forget to visit Le Puy en Velay, Chaise Dieu and Polignac. |
