For several years now, I have been fascinated by Japan, and once I started studying Japanese, I set out on a truly memorable journey to Japan - my first visit to the Far East. First stop was Tokyo, a boiling cauldron of people, people and more people! I had never seen the like of it. Even though London can be oppresive with huge numbers of commuters, it was nothing compared. To escape this organised mayhem, I headed north to Nikko - a couple of hours away on the shinkansen. My journey took me north to Akita, Kakunodate, Hokkaido and Sapporo - click here for map of japan - where I took a plane south. Warm Fukuoka was welcomed with open arms, I had escaped from Sapporo's late winter weather into Fukuoka's early summer in only two hours. From Fukuoka I sped east by shinkansen to the main island of Honshu. Leaving the main railway, I turned due north along a smaller residential line where trains chug along at a far more sedate pace. These areas were a million miles from the throbbing metropolis of Osaka, Kobe and Tokyo. I sat under the intense gaze of many local children whilst travelling through these areas as I was a rare foreigner. It was nice to be considered such a novelty !!! |
